Lakers Explore Trade for Onyeka Okongwu Ahead of Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers appeared to be actively exploring trade possibilities ahead of the February deadline, particularly after their notable acquisition of Luka Dončić. During a recent appearance on the Straight Fire podcast with Jason McIntyre, ESPN's Dave McMenamin revealed that the Lakers reached out to the Atlanta Hawks regarding a potential deal involving Onyeka Okongwu. According to McMenamin, this inquiry took place prior to the Lakers' initial agreement with the Charlotte Hornets for Mark Williams, a deal that was ultimately rescinded before its public announcement.
Onyeka Okongwu, a former USC standout, presents a compelling profile as a 6'10" lob threat with defensive capabilities in the paint, making him a player with whom Dončić has previously thrived. While he may not fit the mold of a superstar that many Lakers fans might desire, Okongwu would have addressed the significant center position void that the Lakers faced during the playoffs, particularly in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The timing is also favorable, as Okongwu, who will celebrate his 25th birthday in December, aligns well with the Lakers’ current trajectory centered around Dončić as the franchise’s future.
Additionally, Okongwu's contract, which has three years remaining at a reasonable value of $47.98 million, would contribute to a strategic roster management for Los Angeles. Although the Atlanta Hawks promoted Okongwu to the starting center position over Clint Capela in January, they may not have been inclined to entertain trade discussions given their current team direction. The Hawks face their own challenges, having missed the playoffs in the last two seasons and not exceeding 43 wins since the 2015-16 season. Should they consider a short-term rebuild, Okongwu's age, improved statistics—including career highs of 13.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game during this past season—make him one of their most valuable trade assets. Meanwhile, the Lakers are anticipated to continue their search for a starting center this summer following a playoff run where Jaxson Hayes struggled to make an impact, averaging only 30 minutes across four games against the Timberwolves.
