Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns superstar, is currently under contract through the 2025-26 NBA season. However, team governor Mat Ishbia has expressed optimism that Durant will sign an extension following the conclusion of the current season. In a recent interview with ESPN's Shams Charania, Ishbia stated, 'We have a great relationship with Kevin. He's a great guy, he loves being in Phoenix, we love having him.'
Durant's impressive performance to start the season positions him as one of the leading contenders for the MVP award, and with the Suns off to a positive beginning, expectations remain high. Ishbia added, 'We expect Kevin to sign an extension, be with us for the long term. We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix. There’s never been one grumbling of anything different.' Although Durant could have opted for a one-year extension worth $59.7 million before the 2024-25 campaign, he is instead set to become eligible for a two-year, $120 million extension this summer, which would keep him with the franchise through the 2027-28 season.
Should Durant secure this contract, it would mark seven seasons with the Suns, a noteworthy tenure considering his past with other teams where he spent less time. The Suns' performance this season may influence his decision regarding his long-term future with the organization. While expectations for the team have been high since acquiring Durant, past seasons have not fully met those ambitions, highlighted by last year's struggles as injuries prevented the trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal from developing chemistry, resulting in a first-round playoff exit. Nonetheless, the Suns have had a solid start to the 2024-25 season with a record of 9-6, and Durant, even at 36 years old, continues to showcase his skills, averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. As the season unfolds, the Suns will be keenly aware that Durant's production remains a core part of their strategy moving forward.
