Jonathan Kumingas Future with the Warriors in Question Amid Trade Talks

Golden State Warriors restricted free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga has recently attracted significant attention in the league due to ongoing sign-and-trade negotiations. As reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors have engaged in discussions regarding a potential sign-and-trade deal with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. Notably, one of the contract offers made to Kuminga was for nearly $90 million over four years, including a player option in the final year. The specific team that extended this proposal was not clearly defined, although Charania and Slater indicated that the Suns have made the most lucrative push for Kuminga thus far.
Further developments from Charania noted that the Kings have offered the Warriors a conditional first-round pick along with a rotation player. However, the Warriors' preference appears to be for an unprotected first-round pick, as revealed in the ongoing discussions. Conversely, ESPN's Marc J. Spears provided insight into the Suns' offer, which reportedly includes Royce O'Neale, Nick Richards, and four second-round picks. Despite the ongoing trade talks, sources indicate that the Warriors are currently 'uninterested' in the proposals from Sacramento and Phoenix, prompting the team to signal a potential shift in strategy by cutting off sign-and-trade discussions entirely.
The Warriors are under no obligation to trade Kuminga, as he remains under team control following Golden State's extension of a qualifying offer. Should the Warriors choose to withdraw from the current trade discussions, they reportedly intend to retain him on the roster for the 2025-26 season, either under the one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer or a separate two-year offer they have proposed. It is important to note that while Kuminga could opt to refuse the offer in an attempt to force a trade, doing so would involve significant financial risks.
Drafted as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, the 22-year-old Kuminga had a breakout season in 2023-24 after primarily serving as a bench contributor in his first two seasons. In 74 games—46 of which were starts—Kuminga recorded averages of 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, showcasing a career-best shooting percentage of 52.9% from the field. Though expectations were high for Kuminga, following a season where he averaged 15.3 points on a career-low shooting percentage of 45.4%, as well as 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists, his performance early in the postseason remained inconclusive.
However, with Stephen Curry sidelined due to injury, Kuminga demonstrated his capabilities during four playoff games, averaging 24.3 points on an impressive 55.4% shooting from the field. Additionally, he made 1.8 three-pointers per game at a 38.9% clip. These performances highlighted Kuminga's untapped potential, particularly if granted significant playing time in an expanded role. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the Warriors will prioritize placing him in such a position next season, particularly with strong offensive presences like Curry and Jimmy Butler already on the roster. Nonetheless, Kuminga's youth and scoring prowess suggest he remains a highly valuable asset for the team.
