Jonathan Kuminga Receives Significant Contract Offer Amid Trade Discussions

The Golden State Warriors' restricted free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga has reportedly garnered considerable interest with a substantial contract offer during ongoing sign-and-trade negotiations. Reports from ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater indicate that the Warriors are exploring potential sign-and-trade arrangements with both the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns. One notable contract offer presented to Kuminga is said to be nearly $90 million over four years, including a player option for the final year. However, the specific team responsible for this offer has not been disclosed, although Charania and Slater noted that the Suns have made the most aggressive pursuit of Kuminga so far.
In addition to the contract offers, Charania reported on NBA Today that the Kings have proposed a conditional first-round pick along with a rotation player to entice the Warriors. Nevertheless, the Warriors are reportedly holding out for an unprotected first-round pick, according to Charania. ESPN's Marc J. Spears also highlighted on NBA Today that the offer from the Suns includes contributions from Royce O'Neale, Nick Richards, and four second-round picks. Despite the trade discussions surrounding Kuminga, the Warriors have expressed a lack of interest in the returns presented by both Sacramento and Phoenix at this juncture. Consequently, the franchise has begun signaling a potential decision to cease sign-and-trade conversations altogether, as noted by Charania and Slater.
It is important to note that the Warriors retain control over Kuminga, having extended him a qualifying offer, thus eliminating any obligation to complete a trade. Should the Warriors choose to step back from the current trade discussions, they plan to retain Kuminga on their roster for the 2025-26 season. This retention could occur under the terms of a one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer or a separate two-year proposal already extended to him. While Kuminga has the option to refuse the contract and attempt to leverage a trade, doing so would put him at risk of forfeiting a significant sum of money. Selected as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, the 22-year-old Kuminga experienced a breakout campaign during the 2023-24 season, transitioning from a primarily bench role to a more prominent position. Over 74 games, including 46 starts, Kuminga averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, achieving a career-best shooting percentage of 52.9% from the field. Although expectations were high for his development, with a previous average of 15.3 points at a lower shooting percentage of 45.4% last season, Kuminga demonstrated potential during the playoffs, particularly in the absence of Stephen Curry due to injury. In the four postseason games where he stepped up in Curry's absence, Kuminga averaged 24.3 points, shooting 55.4% from the field and making 1.8 three-pointers per game at a 38.9% rate. This performance underscores his considerable potential if afforded an increased role on the team, although it remains uncertain whether the Warriors will allow him such opportunities with established stars like Curry and Jimmy Butler leading their offensive efforts. Nonetheless, Kuminga's youth and scoring ability keep him as a valuable asset for the franchise.
