Jersey Swap Sparks Friendship: Ovechkin and Malkin Celebrate Milestone After Rivals Clash

Rivalry Meets Respect in NHL
In a night charged with competitive spirit, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin showcased an act of sportsmanship following their recent matchup between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. On Thursday night, the Penguins triumphed with a 5-3 victory on home ice, yet it was the moment after the game that caught everyone’s attention.
Malkin took to Instagram to share a heartwarming moment with his long-time rival, posting a photo of their jersey swap alongside a caption that simply read, "900." This gesture celebrated Ovechkin’s incredible achievement just two days earlier, when he became the first player in NHL history to score 900 career goals during the Capitals’ win against the St. Louis Blues.
A Milestone Celebrated
The rivalry between Ovechkin and Malkin dates back to the 2004 NHL Draft when Ovechkin was chosen first overall by the Capitals and Malkin followed as the second pick by the Penguins. Throughout their careers, they have exchanged intense battles on the ice but have also shared moments of camaraderie off it. Notably, during last year’s celebration of Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goalscoring record by netting his 895th goal, Malkin and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby gifted him a Rolex to honor the historic achievement.
Furthermore, both players have represented their country on the international stage, skating together for Russia at three Winter Olympics, including the 2014 Games in Sochi. However, with the recent International Olympic Committee’s decision rendering Russia ineligible for team sports at the 2026 Milan Olympics, neither will have the opportunity to don their national colors again in the next Winter Games.
This jersey swap symbolizes not only their personal respect for each other but also highlights the sportsmanship present even amidst fierce rivalry. As the NHL season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate more matchups between these two legends of the game.
