Jerry Jones Considers Mike McCarthys Future Amid Cowboys' Challenges
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently expressed that the notion of extending head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract is not out of the question. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan's Shan & RJ, Jones stated, 'I don't think that's crazy at all.' He emphasized McCarthy's credentials, referring to him as 'an outstanding coach' and a 'Super Bowl winning coach,' noting that McCarthy has the experience and strategic acumen necessary for success.
McCarthy is currently in the final season of the five-year contract he signed with the Cowboys in 2020. As the Cowboys face significant challenges this season, including a 4-7 record and the absence of quarterback Dak Prescott due to a hamstring injury that required surgery, they are at risk of finishing with their worst record under McCarthy's leadership. However, following a recent victory against the Washington Commanders, where the Cowboys scored 24 points in the fourth quarter, Jones highlighted the potential for a turnaround.
Jones earlier articulated that the evaluation of the team's success hinges more on their competitiveness during games rather than their win-loss record alone. Following a Week 10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, he reiterated his criteria, which include assessing the team's overall performance, competitiveness in challenging situations, and the strategic approach taken in games. Despite the current struggles, McCarthy will aim to build on the momentum of the recent win as the Cowboys prepare to face the New York Giants at home.
