In a tough battle against the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love struggled to make an impact, finishing with just 63 rushing yards on 14 carries in the team's 36-24 defeat. The game raised concerns among fans and analysts as Love openly discussed his physical challenges and the mental strain that comes with transitioning to the NFL.
Following the game, Love revealed to reporters that although he is adapting to his new role, his body often feels "tired." These candid remarks may surprise some, as rookie players typically shy away from discussing their physical limitations. "My body sometimes is down," Love explained. "Sometimes tired. So it's just managing those things. And coaches know that. This is probably gonna be the longest year of my life. I just want to manage that workload."
Adjusting to the NFL
With only four games under his belt in the professional ranks, Love is still acclimating to the demands of the NFL. So far, he has logged fewer than 15 carries in three of those games and has yet to surpass the 100-yard mark in a single outing. His best performance, which came in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers, featured career highs of 21 carries and 90 rushing yards. However, his momentum faltered in the game against the Giants.
During the third quarter of Sunday's matchup, Love was seen on the sidelines receiving treatment for an ankle issue, though he downplayed the severity of any injury. "I didn't go out there hurt or anything like that. They're doing what they need to do to keep me up so that I can finish the season," he stated.
Frustration with Self, Not Coaches
Despite a challenging start to his rookie season, Love remains committed to improving and helping his team succeed. He expressed frustration not with the coaching staff, but with his own performance. "I'm really frustrated with myself because I just want to be good. I want to be 100 percent and I want to go out there and do what I need to do. Not saying I'm not 100 percent, but I'm not where I want to be," Love confessed. "I'm not able to go out there and do spectacular plays every single time or stuff like that. So just frustrated with myself, not with the coaches, but they're doing a great job of managing me."
Looking Ahead: Matchup Against the Lions
For the Cardinals, the upcoming Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions presents a potential turning point. The Lions have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 119.8 rushing yards per game and an alarming 31.8 points each game—the worst in the league. This provides Love with an opportunity to capitalize and regain confidence as part of his development.
A strong performance from Love against Detroit could not only boost his individual statistics but also help the Cardinals break free from a three-game losing streak. The young running back may find the increased yardage and scoring potential a perfect way to boost his morale and demonstrate his skills in the NFL.
As the season progresses, Love's ability to manage his workload and adapt to the rigors of professional football will be under scrutiny. However, he remains optimistic about the journey ahead. If he can channel his frustrations into a vigorous performance and leverage the matchups against less formidable defenses, there’s no telling how quickly he could turn his early-season struggles into success on the field.
