Jacksonville Jaguars Appoint Liam Coen as Head Coach Following Doug Pedersons Exit
After parting ways with head coach Doug Pederson following a disappointing 2024 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly identified their new head coach. The franchise has selected Liam Coen, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to take the reins. This information was initially reported by Dianna Russini of Moneyline, indicating that while the two parties still need to finalize contract negotiations, Coen is currently returning to Tampa for discussions with representatives.
Further developments emerged as Jeff Howe from Moneyline noted that Coen had officially notified the Buccaneers of his intent to accept the Jaguars' offer. Additionally, ESPN's Adam Schefter commented that the prevailing belief within the league is that a contract between Coen and the Jaguars will soon be in place. Earlier reports suggested that Jacksonville proposed Coen a salary comparable to that of Ben Johnson, coupled with a multi-year commitment, marking a notable shift in both Coen's and the Jaguars' positions over the past days.
Coen, a seasoned assistant at both the collegiate and professional levels, led the Buccaneers' offense during the 2024 season. Under his guidance, Tampa Bay achieved impressive statistical success, ranking third in the NFL with an average of 399.5 total yards per game and fourth with 29.5 points per game, contributing to their fourth consecutive NFC South title. Despite a playoff exit against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Wild Card Round, Coen's influence was evident, especially in his development of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who recorded career-highs of 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. Rookie running back Bucky Irving also demonstrated notable performance under Coen's play-calling, finishing among the league leaders with 1,122 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Following the conclusion of Pederson's tenure, which ended with a 4-13 record in the 2024 season, the Jaguars are optimistic that Coen can rejuvenate the team and maximize the potential of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who had a challenging season marred by injuries. Jacksonville, holding the fifth overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, hopes to complement Coen's leadership with impactful new talent.
