Increasing Trade Speculation for Steven Kwan Amid Guardians Struggles

As the Cleveland Guardians navigate a tumultuous 2025 season, speculation is mounting around two-time All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan as a potential trade candidate ahead of Thursday's 6 p.m. ET deadline. Though it remains uncertain whether the 27-year-old will be dealt, his trade likelihood has reportedly increased from approximately five percent to around 35 percent, particularly following a series of disappointing performances, including four losses in five games, compounded by the news of an elite closer being placed on 'non-disciplinary leave' amid a gambling investigation.
Kwan, who earned All-Star honors earlier this month and last season, still has two years of team control remaining, with a salary of $4.175 million for the current season. Known for his exceptional contact-hitting ability, Kwan's .285 batting average since his debut in 2022 places him in the 95th percentile among qualified hitters, surpassing notable players like Bryce Harper (.284) and José Ramírez (.283), while closely trailing Shohei Ohtani (.292) and Bobby Witt Jr. (.288). His performance features a remarkable ability to avoid strikeouts and a solid base-running capacity, having accumulated 63 stolen bases throughout his career. Kwan is also a three-time reigning Gold Glove winner and leads all major league outfielders with nine assists this season, solidifying his high trade value. According to Baseball Trade Values, his median surplus value is estimated at 52.4, making him a highly sought-after player for teams in need of an outfielder.
In light of recent developments surrounding the Guardians, there is a growing belief that the team might be more open to trading Kwan than previously expected. As reported by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Guardians are not under an obligation to trade Kwan, but their playoff prospects for 2025 appear bleak. Amid this uncertainty, several teams could potentially pursue Kwan, each with varying degrees of need for his services. The New York Yankees, despite a roster fit that may not align perfectly, could be motivated to acquire Kwan as they look to secure a playoff position, especially with the potential departures of Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger after the season. The Houston Astros, facing injury challenges, might view Kwan as a way to solidify their outfield and improve their standing in the AL West, although their underwhelming farm system may hinder negotiations with Cleveland. The San Francisco Giants, currently struggling and falling behind in the NL wild-card race, could consider parting with their top prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge, if they decide to chase Kwan.
On the other hand, the Cincinnati Reds, after a resurgence entering the playoff picture, could also benefit from Kwan's presence in the outfield, though their track record as deadline buyers raises questions about their willingness to execute such a move. The New York Mets might find trading for Kwan an appealing solution to their long-standing outfield woes, particularly if they transition Brandon Nimmo back to center field. However, owner Steve Cohen's reluctance to part with multiple high-value prospects could be a deterrent. The Los Angeles Dodgers, another team in need of a left fielder, have seen Michael Conforto revive his performance recently, which may impact their urgency to acquire Kwan. Similarly, the Seattle Mariners could see Kwan as a solution to their ongoing right field struggles, given his established track record. Lastly, the Philadelphia Phillies, who are experiencing some issues with their current outfielders, could view Kwan as a transformative addition that would enhance their postseason hopes, leveraging their prospect capital to make a competitive offer. As the trade deadline approaches, Kwan’s situation remains fluid, with various teams considering how his skills could address their pressing needs.
