Igor Shesterkin Shines in Rangers' Centennial Season Opener Against Penguins

New York Rangers Celebrate 100 Years of History
The New York Rangers are stepping into the spotlight for the 2025-26 season, marking a significant milestone: their 100th year in franchise history. As they embark on this historic journey, goaltender Igor Shesterkin made a grand statement during the season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On Tuesday, Shesterkin donned special centennial season gear, showcasing his pride in the iconic franchise. His mask featured a striking design with a Big Apple motif, prominently displaying the number 100, symbolizing the team's rich legacy.
A Legacy of Excellence
As one of the Original Six teams in the NHL, along with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and Toronto Maple Leafs, the Rangers boast an extensive history. They have captured four Stanley Cup titles and are celebrated for having a legendary Hall of Fame goaltender in Henrik Lundqvist, who set a high standard for future players.
Shesterkin, now 29, is on a path to create his own memorable legacy with the Rangers. He was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender in the 2021-22 season and earned All-Star selections in both 2023 and 2024. His impressive career metrics include a save percentage of .917 and a goals against average of 2.52.
Aiming for the Cup
This season, Shesterkin aims to lead the Rangers back to the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. During their recent postseason runs, the team advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals on two occasions. However, the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup, still eludes him. With the 100th season offering a backdrop filled with history, winning the Stanley Cup would be a fitting achievement for Shesterkin and the Rangers.
