Gavin McKenna Takes No. 72 to Penn State: A New Era in College Hockey

Gavin McKenna, a highly touted prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft, is set to bring his talents to NCAA hockey, specifically to Penn State University. The program recently announced that McKenna will don the number 72, a number he wore during his time with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, where he achieved an impressive total of 129 points in just 56 games last season.
Historically, No. 72 has yet to be worn by any Penn State player, marking a milestone for McKenna as he pushes the boundaries of jersey numbers at the program. The previously highest number worn by a Nittany Lions player was No. 35. Additionally, McKenna is not alone in breaking traditional norms; fellow incoming freshman and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nolan Collins will wear No. 77, while Shea Van Olm, a former WHL standout, is set to establish a new record with No. 93.
The changing landscape of NCAA hockey, particularly a recent rule adjustment allowing former CHL players to compete, has positioned McKenna as one of the most anticipated prospects in college hockey. His commitment to Penn State was announced on July 8, after he was also considering Michigan State. The Nittany Lions are coming off their inaugural Frozen Four appearance, with Aiden Fink, a Nashville Predators prospect and Hobey Baker award finalist, returning to the squad. McKenna aims to contribute to a strong push for a national title next spring, which may be his only season in college hockey before entering the NHL Draft.
