Gavin McKenna Joins Penn State with Historic Jersey Number

Gavin McKenna is poised to make a notable transition from the Western Hockey League (WHL) to NCAA hockey, as he dons the jersey number 72 for his inaugural season with the Penn State Nittany Lions. This announcement was made by the program on Tuesday, signaling a significant moment for both McKenna and the university. Previously, McKenna sported the same number while playing for the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, where he delivered an impressive performance, recording 129 points over the span of 56 games last season.
Traditionally, Penn State has not assigned the number 72 to any player in its history. The highest number previously worn by a Nittany Lions player was 35. McKenna's choice represents a departure from this trend, as several incoming freshmen have opted for higher jersey numbers. Among them is Nolan Collins, a defenseman and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, who will wear number 77. Additionally, Shea Van Olm, a freshman forward and former WHL standout, will set a new record for the program with the highest jersey number at 93. In contrast, Jackson Smith, another freshman defenseman, will wear number 7 after being selected in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The recent rule modification permitting former Canadian Hockey League (CHL) players to compete in NCAA hockey has positioned McKenna as one of the most eagerly anticipated prospects entering collegiate play before the 2026 NHL Draft. The 17-year-old forward pledged his commitment to Penn State on July 8, after considering options including Michigan State. This season is particularly promising for the Nittany Lions, who are coming off their first Frozen Four appearance. With Aiden Fink, a prospect for the Nashville Predators and a Hobey Baker Award finalist from last season, also returning, the Penn State program aims to contend for a national championship in the upcoming spring, while McKenna prepares for what could be his only collegiate season before advancing to the NHL.
