Future Uncertain for Pete Alonso and the New York Mets
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen recently acknowledged the potential for the team to move forward without first baseman Pete Alonso. During a public address, Cohen discussed the ongoing contract negotiations with Alonso, expressing dissatisfaction with the current offer's structure. 'I don't like the negotiations,' Cohen stated. 'I don't like what's been presented to us. Maybe that changes... If it stays this way, I think we have to get used to the fact that we may have to go forward with existing players.'
Cohen's comments, made during the team's annual 'Amazin' Day' event, were met with reactions from the fanbase, who voiced their support for Alonso by chanting 'We want Pete.' This sentiment was directed towards Cohen, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, and manager Carlos Mendoza, highlighting the player's popularity and importance within the organization.
Shortly after Cohen's remarks, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor shared his thoughts on the situation, acknowledging the impact of Alonso's potential departure. 'It would be different if he goes somewhere else,' Lindor noted, emphasizing the need for Alonso to make a decision that benefits him personally. Alonso, a four-time All-Star and a key member of the Mets since 2019, had a successful 2024 season, recording a .240 batting average with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs while helping the team reach the National League Championship Series. He reportedly declined a three-year contract extension from the Mets earlier this year and has garnered interest from other teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays.
