Future of Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen Appears Secure
The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly not expected to part ways with head coach Shane Steichen during the upcoming offseason. In a recent episode of the Scoop City podcast, Dianna Russini from The Athletic shared insights gathered from discussions around the NFL, suggesting that there is a prevailing sentiment that Steichen will stay with the Colts through at least 2025. Russini noted, "I've had some conversations around the league, in terms of Shane Steichen. I don't get the sense that they're going to make a move at this moment. But that could be something that changes."
Following a disappointing 45-33 loss to the New York Giants that concluded the Colts' playoff aspirations, there have been numerous questions raised about both the present and future trajectory of the franchise. A significant focus has been directed towards general manager Chris Ballard and his performance over the past eight seasons. According to The MMQB's Albert Breer, there have been rumors within the league regarding the possibility of a change at the general manager position. Ballard's record with Indianapolis is a mixed one, as the team has achieved only one playoff victory in two appearances and has recorded four winning seasons since his hiring in January 2017. Notably, the Colts have yet to secure an AFC South title, while their division rivals have each won the title at least twice during that span.
Another pressing issue for the Colts has been the development of second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson. The young quarterback has exhibited moments of brilliance that justify his selection as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, yet these instances have not occurred consistently enough to instill confidence in his long-term potential as the team's leader. Adding to the complexity of the situation was an unusual episode earlier in the season when Richardson was benched after he candidly acknowledged replacing himself in a game due to fatigue. Steichen initially suggested that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco would take over as the starter for the rest of the season, only to revert back to Richardson in Week 11. In the NFL, it is not uncommon for teams to dismiss a general manager while allowing the head coach to remain, although this can create a precarious atmosphere. A new general manager often prefers the opportunity to appoint a head coach of their choosing rather than inheriting one from a previous administration. As Steichen approaches the conclusion of his second season as Colts head coach, he holds a record of 16-17. He was appointed to the role after a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2021 to 2022, where he played a pivotal role in guiding the team to the Super Bowl in his final season.
