Former Miami Heat Employee Charged with Theft of Team Memorabilia

A former employee of the Miami Heat has been charged with transporting and transferring stolen goods across state lines. The charges relate to allegations that Marcos Thomas Perez, a 25-year veteran of the City of Miami Police Department and a former security officer for the Heat, stole millions of dollars' worth of memorabilia from the Kaseya Center over a period spanning from 2016 to 2025.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Southern District of Florida, Perez had access to a secured equipment room that housed hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other collectibles intended for a future museum display by the franchise. Among the stolen items were more than 400 jerseys, which Perez reportedly sold, generating approximately $2 million in profits over three years.
Notable among the stolen merchandise was a jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which Perez sold for $100,000. This particular jersey later achieved a remarkable auction price of $3.7 million at Sotheby’s. In a significant development, law enforcement officials recovered around 300 stolen game-worn jerseys and memorabilia from Perez's home after executing a search warrant in April. The Miami Heat organization has since confirmed that the items were indeed stolen from their facilities.
