Former Miami Heat Employee Charged with Theft of Memorabilia

A former employee of the Miami Heat has been arraigned in court, facing charges related to the transportation and transfer of stolen goods in interstate commerce. Marcos Thomas Perez, a retired 25-year veteran of the City of Miami Police Department and former security officer for the Heat, is accused of pilfering items valued at millions of dollars from the organization over a span of several years.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, Perez allegedly stole items from the Kaseya Center between 2016 and 2025. He reportedly had access to a secured equipment room that housed hundreds of game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia intended for display in a future team museum. The investigation revealed that Perez sold more than 100 of these stolen items for an estimated total of $2 million. Notably, one item included a jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals, which was sold by Perez for $100,000 and later fetched $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
In a significant development, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Perez's residence in April, leading to the seizure of approximately 300 stolen game-worn jerseys and memorabilia. The U.S. Attorney's Office has confirmed that these items were indeed stolen from the Miami Heat facilities, casting a shadow over the organization that prides itself on its heritage and connection to its fans.
