Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. Faces Uncertain Future After Knee Injury

Falcons Lose Starting QB Michael Penix Jr. to Knee Injury
The Atlanta Falcons may have to navigate the remainder of the season without their starting quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., who reportedly sustained a significant knee injury during Sunday’s overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers. ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the concerning news, suggesting that Penix could be sidelined for the rest of the season.
According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Penix appears to have aggravated a previous knee injury that had already forced him out of one game earlier this season. Following the game against the Panthers, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris indicated there was uncertainty surrounding Penix's condition, noting that while he could have potentially returned, the situation “didn’t look good.”
Backup Quarterback Options
With the status of Penix unclear, backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is preparing to step into the starting role for the upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Morris expressed confidence in Cousins, stating that preparations would be made based on what the veteran quarterback does best. “You change the quarterback, so you got to do what the quarterback does well, so we'll go find out what Kirk does well this week,” Morris remarked.
Cousins struggled in his brief appearance against the Panthers, completing 6 of 14 passes for just 48 yards. This performance marks his third outing since joining the Falcons, with a more impressive showing earlier in the season against the Miami Dolphins, where he threw for 173 yards with a completion rate of 67.7%.
Impact on the Team
Penix has made a notable impact in his first year as the Falcons' starting quarterback, amassing 1,807 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. His performance prior to the injury against Carolina showcased his potential, completing 13 of 16 passes for 175 yards.
Moreover, the Falcons are dealing with additional setbacks as star wide receiver Drake London exited the game with a knee injury after racking up 119 yards on seven receptions. With a current record of 3-7, the Falcons' hopes of making a postseason push are becoming more tenuous, and the potential loss of both Penix and London could significantly hinder their chances.
