Examining Potential Free Agency Raises for Overlooked NBA Players

As the NBA playoffs approach the Finals, attention turns to the impending free agency period. This off-season may present challenges in the free-agent market, particularly due to the limited high-end buyers. Despite this, a selection of undervalued players is expected to attract interest, especially those seeking contracts beyond their rookie deals.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have concluded their season, and with back-to-back appearances in the Western Conference Finals, they face the critical task of retaining their key players, beginning with Naz Reid. At 25 years old, Reid holds a $15 million player option for the upcoming season but is anticipated to opt out. His performance has exceeded the expectations of his contract, highlighted by winning the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2024, averaging a career-high 14.2 points per game and shooting 37.3 percent from three throughout his career. Reid's ability to contribute offensively from the bench at a cost of $13.9 million has proven advantageous, but that scenario is unlikely to persist, as many teams are likely to pursue him, potentially leading to a starting salary in the vicinity of $20 million.
Another Timberwolves player expected to seek a raise is Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who enters unrestricted free agency this offseason after completing a two-year, $9 million contract. Despite a downturn in shooting during the playoffs, Alexander-Walker demonstrated valuable contributions throughout the regular season, shooting 38.1 percent from three on 4.5 attempts per game. His abilities to attack closeouts and facilitate offense position him as an attractive option for teams in need of perimeter shooting and defense, suggesting a busy offseason ahead in terms of interest for Alexander-Walker.
Ty Jerome made significant strides towards the end of the season, positioning himself as a candidate for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Jerome’s career trajectory has been notable, having been drafted by the Phoenix Suns, then signing with the Golden State Warriors as a two-way player, and ultimately joining the Cleveland Cavaliers on a two-year, $5 million deal. After recording career-highs of 12.5 points and 43.9 percent shooting from three on 3.6 attempts, Jerome is poised to transition from an under-the-radar free agent to a highly sought-after player. Although his postseason performance saw a decline, Jerome's potential for a salary increase is evident, with initial discussions likely to center around contracts similar to Payton Pritchard's four-year, $30 million agreement with the Boston Celtics.
Guerschon Yabusele’s professional journey has been marked by varied experiences across different leagues. A first-round pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Yabusele played two seasons with the Boston Celtics and subsequently spent time playing overseas in China and France, along with several years in Spain with Real Madrid. His recent re-emergence in the league during the 2024 Paris Olympics with the French national team led to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Although the Sixers faced challenges this past season, Yabusele emerged as a notable contributor, averaging 11 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 50.1 percent from the field. Having earned just over $2 million last season, Yabusele will likely see an increase in his salary as teams look to bolster their frontcourt depth.
A notable trade during the recent season involved the Dallas Mavericks sending Quentin Grimes to the Philadelphia 76ers, largely influenced by Grimes’ looming restricted free agency. Upon joining Philadelphia, Grimes showcased his potential, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists across 28 games. His performance underscores his viability as a crucial rotation player, coinciding perfectly with his entry into restricted free agency. Grimes' initial rookie contract was worth $11 million over four years, and despite being a restricted free agent, he can expect a lucrative offer reflecting his strong showing with the Sixers. The Sixers are reportedly interested in re-signing Grimes; however, negotiations will hinge on the value presented by other interested teams.
