Eugenio Suarez Returns to Mariners in Trade with Diamondbacks

In a significant move during his impressive 2025 season, Eugenio Suarez, the third baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been traded back to the Seattle Mariners. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the trade was finalized on Wednesday night. This marks a return for Suarez, who was initially acquired by the Diamondbacks less than two years ago in an offseason deal following the 2023 campaign.
In exchange for Suarez, the Diamondbacks received three prospects, all of whom are ranked among the top 20 in the Mariners' system, as reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Leading the contingent is Tyler Locklear, who is ranked No. 9 according to MLB.com. Suarez enjoyed a successful first year with the Diamondbacks in 2024, hitting 30 home runs and driving in 101 RBIs. This season, he has continued to demonstrate his power, posting a .248 batting average with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs, earning him a second career All-Star selection. Notably, he has also been recognized as the National League Player of the Week on four occasions.
Suarez made headlines earlier in the season when he became just the 19th player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a single game during a loss to the Atlanta Braves. Additionally, he reached the milestone of 300 career home runs earlier this season. Despite being acknowledged as one of the premier power-hitting third basemen in the league, Suarez has faced challenges in finding a lasting home. He began his Major League career with the Detroit Tigers in 2014 before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds the following year. After spending seven seasons in Cincinnati, he joined the Mariners, where he remained for two years before the Diamondbacks acquired him. The addition of a strong power hitter like Suarez is expected to bolster the Mariners' lineup as they pursue a playoff spot, complementing the skills of star catcher Cal Raleigh as they look to improve on their current record of 57-51.
