Eric Dickerson Comments on Saquon Barkleys Pursuit of Rushing Record
Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson expressed his support for fellow running backs while asserting that he does not wish for Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley to eclipse his single-season rushing yards record. In a video shared by TMZ Sports, Dickerson stated, 'I love running backs, I'm a running back... I would never hate on another running back. That's not me.'
Dickerson elaborated on his position, highlighting that while he would not lose sleep if Barkley broke his record, he is not actively cheering for it to happen. 'If you have a record, and you want somebody to break it, that's on you. I'm different,' he remarked. The Eagles head coach, Nick Sirianni, recently announced that Barkley will not participate in Week 18 against the New York Giants, leaving him 100 yards short of the record set by Dickerson in 1984.
Commenting on the context of Barkley's situation, Dickerson noted that Barkley had 17 games to aim for the record, contrasting this with the 16-game season he played in 1984. This statement comes in light of criticism from former running back LeSean McCoy, who suggested that running backs should maintain solidarity. Dickerson defended his position, referencing his own acknowledgment that he required an additional game to surpass O.J. Simpson's single-season rushing yards record, established in 14 games. Had Barkley played against the Giants, it would have been his 17th game of the season, but with the Eagles having secured the NFC East title, Sirianni decided to rest his starters, concluding Barkley's pursuit with him 101 yards shy of NFL history.
