Early Projections for the 2026 NHL Draft

The anticipation surrounding the 2026 NHL Draft has begun, with early discussions circulating about what the Top 10 might look like. Topping the current consensus is Gavin McKenna, who has been a focal point in these discussions. Unlike other prospects, it appears unlikely that McKenna will relinquish his position as the first overall pick. He has recently committed to playing NCAA hockey at Penn State after moving from the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. Although some analysts may overreact to his transition, most agree that this is clearly McKenna's spot to lose.
In addition to McKenna, several other prospects are quickly gaining attention as potential Top 10 picks. One such player is Keaton Verhoeff, a formidable 6'4" defenseman whose physical presence is complemented by his skating ability. Having played for the Victoria Royals in the WHL, he is set to take on new challenges at the University of North Dakota this coming season, competing against older, more experienced players. This transition will be vital for his development leading up to the draft.
Next on the prospect list is Ivar Stenberg, who made significant strides last season by competing for Frolunda's junior team and later stepping up for the senior team, especially during the playoffs. His performance in the U18 World Championships showcased his skill and hockey intelligence, where he emerged as a leading player for Sweden. Other notable names include Ryan Roobroeck, whose impressive size and scoring ability have made him a prospect to watch, and Ethan Belchetz, a physical presence on the ice with notable goal-scoring potential. These players, along with emerging talents like Viggo Bjorck and Mathis Preston, will contribute to an exciting draft class, each bringing unique attributes that could see them rise in the rankings as the college season progresses.
