Durant Defends Jokić After Injury: 'Don't Label Him Injury Prone'

Durant Speaks Out on Jokić's Injury
In a recent conversation with reporters, Kevin Durant expressed his concern for Nikola Jokić, who suffered a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period. Durant highlighted the dangers of labeling athletes as "injury prone" following such unfortunate incidents, emphasizing that these are often just freak accidents that occur during the high stakes of an NBA game.
Durant, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, reflected on his own experience with injury remarks, stating, "One thing I don't want to see with Nikola is like, they started calling me 'injury prone' after that, but hopefully they don't start with him because it's one of those freak injuries that you can't really control." He elaborated that despite all the training and preparation, the unpredictable nature of the sport can lead to circumstances where players fall and get hurt, as was the case with Jokić.
Details of Jokić's Injury
Jokić's injury occurred during the second quarter of the Denver Nuggets' game against the Miami Heat when teammate Spencer Jones accidentally stepped on his foot, causing his knee to buckle. Following the incident, the Nuggets announced that Jokić had been diagnosed with a hyperextension of his left knee and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.
Durant, who has faced his own significant injuries in the past, can relate to Jokić’s plight all too well. He sprained his MCL in January 2022 while playing for the Brooklyn Nets, and a similar injury occurred a year later against the same Heat team. Durant noted that at that time, it seemed injuries threatened to derail his career, as he had previously missed a large portion of games due to an Achilles tear during the 2019 NBA Finals. However, he has since mostly avoided serious injuries.
Jokić's Season Performance
Notably, the injury to Jokić feels particularly impactful as he is a player known for his durability; he had started each of the first 32 games this season before the injury. Historically, Jokić has maintained a steady presence on the court, appearing in at least 69 games per season over his first decade in the league. Prior to this injury, he was performing at an MVP level, with averages of 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 11.0 assists per game with an impressive shooting percentage of 60.5%.
