Diamondbacks Eye Alex Bregman Amid Ketel Marte Trade Speculations

Trade Talk Heats Up for Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the spotlight as rumors swirl about potential trades involving star players. With Ketel Marte's trade rumors intensifying, Alex Bregman has emerged as a compelling target for the team, according to reports.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic noted a possible scenario where the Diamondbacks could keep Marte while also signing Bregman. However, retaining the All-Star second baseman appears to be increasingly “unrealistic.” USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Arizona is actively exploring options for Bregman, but any acquisition may hinge on trading Marte and repositioning Jordan Lawlar to second base.
Diamondbacks' Future in Question
The Diamondbacks have had a challenging season, finishing with an 80-82 record. With the possibility of losing Zac Gallen to free agency and Corbin Burnes set to miss at least three months of the upcoming season due to Tommy John surgery, the team's strategy remains uncertain. Arizona did make a significant move by re-signing pitcher Merrill Kelly to a two-year, $40 million deal, helping ease some rotation concerns.
Despite the challenges, there is potential for the Diamondbacks to make an unexpected decision to retain both Marte and Bregman, given their history of surprising acquisitions like Zack Greinke in 2015 and Burnes last season. Marte's current high value could lead the Diamondbacks to trade him, potentially bringing in considerable assets to address other weaknesses in the roster.
Marte's Contract and Performance
Marte has five years guaranteed on his contract, along with an $11.5 million player option for the 2031 season, totaling $92 million owed from 2026 to 2031. As a three-time All-Star, he has been a standout player over the last three seasons, boasting a .283/.368/.519 slash line and solid defensive skills at second base.
On the other hand, Bregman, who opted out of his contract with the Red Sox, also carries significant appeal. After a strong showing in his latest season with a .273/.360/.462 slash line over 114 games, he remains a free agent, adding to the intrigue of his potential fit with the Diamondbacks.
The coming weeks will be crucial for the Diamondbacks as they navigate these trade talks and look to solidify their roster ahead of the new season.
