Detroit Lions Penei Sewell Defends Jared Goff Amidst Playoff Loss
Following the Detroit Lions' 45-31 divisional-round playoff defeat to the Washington Commanders, star right tackle Penei Sewell expressed his bewilderment regarding the criticism aimed at quarterback Jared Goff. In post-game comments, Sewell characterized the blame directed at Goff as unjust, stating, "That's bulls--t." He emphasized the team-oriented nature of football, asserting, "I just don't understand how a team sport, people can put a blame on one person at all. It's not like he's the one that's out there by himself. So, I'll never understand it."
Goff's performance during the game was certainly scrutinized, as he completed 23 of 40 attempts for 313 yards, along with one touchdown and three interceptions, which included a pivotal pick-six that allowed Washington to seize a 10-point advantage in the second quarter. In addition to his interceptions, Goff also lost a fumble in the first quarter, further complicating Detroit's efforts to rally from a 31-21 halftime deficit.
Despite the offensive setbacks, the Lions managed to accumulate 521 total yards, averaging an impressive 7.7 yards per play. However, defensive struggles impeded their goal of reclaiming the lead, particularly against Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. The rookie showcased his skills by completing 71 percent of his passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, remaining unscathed by sacks. Washington's ground game proved formidable as well, netting 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Overall, the Lions' defense, which had allowed an average of just 20.1 points per game throughout the regular season, fell short in this playoff contest. Although Goff's turnovers were significant factors in the loss, Sewell maintains that the veteran quarterback should not bear the sole responsibility for the defeat.
