New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray expressed strong criticism following the team's 119-93 defeat to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. Despite the Raptors struggling on the road with ten consecutive losses, they managed to build a substantial 34-point lead over the Pelicans in the second half, drawing boos from the home fans at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
In his post-game remarks, Murray highlighted the importance of accountability, stating, 'If you're not embarrassed and really mad about this, that's a problem.' The Pelicans have had a challenging start to the season with a record of 4-15 and are currently amidst a six-game losing streak. He emphasized that the primary concern was not just the loss itself, but the manner in which the team performed in front of their home supporters. 'What would you do if you were a fan paying your money? You want to come watch a competitive basketball game,' Murray noted, acknowledging the fans' right to voice their frustration.
The Pelicans have been significantly affected by injuries this season, with key players including Brandon Ingram, CJ McCollum, Zion Williamson, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, Jose Alvarado, and Jordan Hawkins sidelined. Murray commented on the adverse effects of constantly rotating players: 'When you've got guys in, guys out, guys in, guys out, it's really tough.' However, he stressed that competing should not be overshadowed by these challenges. 'You can't get punked. You can't get pushed around. Tonight, it was just disgusting. We've got to compete. We've got to play harder, no matter who's on the floor.' Looking ahead, the Pelicans are set to face the Memphis Grizzlies on the road, hoping to reverse their recent fortunes.
