Dallas Mavericks Fire Nico Harrison as General Manager

In a significant shakeup for the Dallas Mavericks, fans chanting "Fire Nico!" have finally seen their wishes granted as the franchise has parted ways with general manager and president of basketball operations, Nico Harrison. The decision comes after a tumultuous season where the team finished with a disappointing 39-43 record and was eliminated in the final play-in tournament game.

As reported by ESPN, interim leadership duties for the basketball operations will be handed over to Shams Charania, Michael Finley, and Matt Riccardi. Harrison previously defended his controversial trade, which involved shipping away star player Luka Doncic, citing concerns over the young star's weight and commitment to conditioning.

Mark Cuban, the long-time owner of the Mavericks who recently sold the majority of his stake to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont, revealed that he was unaware of the trade until after it was finalized. In a press conference alongside head coach Jason Kidd, Harrison alluded to the dire consequences of the trade not working out, stating, "The future to me is [three, four] years from now. The future 10 years from now -- they'll probably bury me and [Kidd] by then. Or we'll bury ourselves." These words seem to have foreshadowed the downward trajectory the team faced this past season.

Harrison's offseason acquisition of Anthony Davis, who was expected to bolster the team's performance, fell short as Davis suffered an adductor strain shortly after joining the Mavs. Meanwhile, star point guard Kyrie Irving faced a season-ending torn ACL injury in early March. The Mavericks had hoped to pivot with their franchise’s future when they won the NBA draft lottery and selected rising star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick. However, Dallas has struggled to start the 2025-26 season, currently holding a 3-8 record as both Davis and Irving remain sidelined due to injuries.
