Dallas Mavericks Continue to Make Moves After Luka Dončić Trade
Following the recent trade of star guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks are actively pursuing further roster changes. Reports from Moneyline indicate that the Mavericks have acquired forward Caleb Martin from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for shooting guard Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round pick that was originally owned by the Sixers.
NBA insider Marc Stein noted that Philadelphia's main motivation for the trade was the second-round pick, which previously belonged to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a 2021 deal for point guard George Hill. Additionally, Jake Fischer, another NBA insider, emphasized that Martin had garnered significant interest around the league, especially as the Sixers' season was adversely affected by injuries. The Milwaukee Bucks were also mentioned as one of the teams showing interest in Martin and may also consider pursuing his twin brother, Cody Martin, who plays for the Charlotte Hornets.
In his inaugural season with Philadelphia, Martin played a crucial role on a depleted team, appearing in 31 games and starting 24 of them. He averaged 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 37.9 from three-point range. A notable highlight from his season came on Christmas Day, where he scored 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc in a victory against the Boston Celtics. Now, Martin joins a reshaped Mavericks team that shocked the league by trading Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for star big man Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie, and a first-round pick in 2029. Currently, Dallas holds an eighth-place position in the Western Conference with a 26-24 record, and there remains the potential for additional moves ahead of the upcoming trade deadline as they transition into a new chapter without Dončić.
