Craig Stammen Takes the Helm as San Diego Padres' New Manager

Stammen Steps Up After Shildt's Surprising Retirement
The San Diego Padres have announced a significant change in their coaching staff, naming former pitcher Craig Stammen as the new manager following Mike Shildt's retirement at the end of the 2025 season. Stammen, who spent the past two years with the Padres' baseball operations and as an assistant coach, has signed a three-year deal to lead the team.
Shildt's unexpected announcement on October 13 has left a mark on the franchise, as he cited the "severe toll on me mentally, physically and emotionally" as reasons for his departure at the age of 57. Under his leadership, the Padres achieved notable success, finishing with a record of 183-141 and securing playoff berths in both seasons. They even pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to a five-game series in the 2024 NLDS, leading the series 2-1 at one point.
As Stammen takes charge, he inherits a roster filled with potential and pressure. The Padres boast superstar players like Fernando Tatis Jr. and an up-and-coming talent in Jackson Merrill, who is looking to bounce back after an injury-marred season. Although the Padres have the talent needed to compete, they face crucial off-season decisions, particularly regarding their pitching staff. With Dylan Cease entering free agency and Yu Darvish nearing the end of his career, San Diego's front office, led by president A.J. Preller, has its work cut out.
Preller has shown a willingness to make bold moves in the past, evidenced by the acquisition of Mason Miller from the Athletics during the trade deadline. While the franchise may not spend as freely as in previous seasons, ownership remains committed to pursuing a championship, making the Padres one of the most appealing managerial vacancies in baseball.
As Stammen prepares for his inaugural season as manager, he will have the support of a talented roster but faces the challenge of leading the Padres past recent playoff disappointments.
