Cooper Flagg Shines as Mavericks Edge Out Pelicans in Thrilling NBA Cup Showdown

Dallas Mavericks Secure Back-to-Back Wins with Rookie Standouts
In an exciting matchup on Friday night, the Dallas Mavericks claimed their fifth victory of the season, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 118-114 during NBA Cup play. The showdown highlighted the talents of rookie sensations Cooper Flagg and Derik Queen, both standout players from their college careers.
Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick out of Duke, showcased his skills by scoring a career-high 29 points, along with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Meanwhile, Derik Queen, selected as the No. 13 pick from Maryland, contributed significantly for the Pelicans with 20 points, seven rebounds, 11 assists, and two steals. Despite Queen's efforts, New Orleans fell to 2-14, marking their eighth consecutive loss of the season.
The Mavericks, now 5-12, are still searching for consistency as they continue to play without Anthony Davis. Flagg has been a bright spot for Dallas, averaging 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists this season. In the competitive NBA Cup, the Mavericks improved their record to 1-2, placing them fourth in West Group B, while the Pelicans remain winless in group play at 0-3.
The game saw New Orleans leading 63-49 at halftime, aided by Trey Murphy III's 15 points and Queen’s eight points at the break. However, the Mavericks clawed back in the second half. A crucial basket by Flagg following a Mavs steal and a decisive three-pointer from Naji Marshall shifted the momentum, allowing Dallas to take a narrow one-point lead with just 30.7 seconds left in the game. P.J. Washington's critical block prevented a potential game-winning three from the Pelicans, securing the victory for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, aiming for their second consecutive win.
