Connor McDavid Signs Two-Year Extension with Oilers, Prioritizing Team Success

Connor McDavid's Strategic $25 Million Extension
In a surprising move, Connor McDavid has officially signed a two-year extension worth $25 million with the Edmonton Oilers, following extensive discussions between his representatives and the team. This announcement, reported by The Athletic's Chris Johnston, emphasizes McDavid's commitment to both his worth and the Oilers' aspirations for success.
McDavid's extension ensures he will earn an annual average of $12.5 million over the next three years, which includes the last season of his previous contract. While he could have commanded a significantly higher average annual value (AAV) of over $20 million by waiting until next offseason, McDavid opted for the more team-friendly deal. His representatives calculated a de facto cap of $15 million per year, aiming to allow the Oilers enough financial flexibility to build a competitive roster through the 2027-28 season.
The negotiations were described as unique by Oilers general manager Stan Bowman, who noted that the discussions mainly revolved around the team's future and vision, rather than typical contractual back-and-forths. Bowman clarified, “It was really more of a dialogue and a conversation throughout the last few months,” highlighting the collaborative spirit of the talks.
When asked about the $12.5 million AAV, Bowman confirmed, “That’s what Connor wanted,” indicating that this was a decision made directly by McDavid's camp and not suggested by the Oilers.
Looking ahead, the NHL salary cap is projected to rise to $104 million ahead of the 2026-27 season. When McDavid's extension takes effect next fall, it will account for only 12 percent of the cap, allowing the Oilers to maintain considerable financial flexibility, especially with Leon Draisaitl already locked in at a $14 million AAV. This strategic maneuvering leaves Edmonton with roughly 75 percent of the salary cap available to support their star forwards in pursuit of a Stanley Cup victory.
As McDavid looks to lead the Oilers towards championship glory, his new contract could very well set the stage for future negotiations that may secure him a long-term deal down the line.
