Clippers Hold Off Trade Talks: Harden and Leonard's Future Remains Uncertain

Clippers Struggle Despite Star Power
The Los Angeles Clippers are facing a challenging start to the 2025-26 NBA season with a disappointing 7-21 record. Despite the efforts of their high-profile players, James Harden and Kawhi Leonard, the team has struggled to find success on the court.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reports that, for now, the Clippers have no plans to trade their two stars. According to sources, the organization is pushing back against speculation surrounding Harden and Leonard's availability in trades. Fischer stated, "Sources say that the Clippers, furthermore, are continuing — at least for the moment — to push back on suggestions that established veterans like James Harden or Kawhi Leonard will be made available."
Player Performances
James Harden, averaging 25.8 points, 8.2 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game, continues to produce at a high level despite his aging status. The 36-year-old recently signed a two-year, $81.5 million contract, opting out of a $36.3 million player option to stay with the team and align with Leonard, who has a contract running through 2027.
Kawhi Leonard has also been performing well when on the court, with averages of 25.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2 steals, although he has missed 10 games this season due to injury.
Future Uncertain for the Stars
While Fischer notes the Clippers' current stance on their stars, other analysts within the NBA, including Marc Stein, suggest that Harden may eventually find himself in trade discussions this winter. The Clippers' management reportedly seems open to adjusting their cap space timeline from 2027 to 2026, which could indicate a willingness to reshape the roster if they lose faith in their current core.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps explained the potential for significant changes by using the Phoenix Suns as an example: "There are a lot of ways to use cap space, and if they don't believe in this core they could really turn their team over in a year if they got flexibility." He raised concerns about both players' current market value, with one scout suggesting Harden's value might be neutral, while Leonard’s could be considered negative due to his injury history and performance consistency issues.
As the Clippers find themselves in a rebuilding position rather than championship contention, it remains to be seen whether they will capitalize on the trade market for their star players to secure a brighter future.
