Cleveland Browns Quarterback Deshaun Watson Suffers Setback with Achilles Injury
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has reportedly experienced a significant setback concerning his previously injured Achilles, identified as a new tear that has necessitated surgical intervention. The team disclosed that Watson 'complained of discomfort after rolling his ankle in Miami,' leading to an MRI that revealed a second rupture of his Achilles. This development raises further questions about Watson's ability to contribute this season.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry addressed the media regarding Watson's rehabilitation progress, stating that they are still in the process of gathering comprehensive information regarding the injury's extent. 'It is new information just learned in the past couple of hours. So, I don't have everything yet,' Berry noted. He emphasized that the team's primary focus remains on ensuring Watson's health and recovery to the fullest extent.
Watson underwent surgery on October 25 to repair an Achilles rupture sustained in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals just five days earlier. While Achilles injuries have become more prevalent in the NFL, instances of a player enduring multiple Achilles tears in close succession are uncommon. The last notable example is running back Cam Akers, who faced similar injuries in July 2021 and November 2023. Despite this, Watson's situation remains unprecedented for a quarterback. Having signed a $156 million contract with the Houston Texans in 2020, Watson's participation has been limited due to injuries and suspensions, and his status for the upcoming seasons is now increasingly uncertain.
