Basketball Hall of Famer Chris Bosh recently revealed a harrowing experience he endured last January due to a pulmonary embolism, an event that nearly cost him his life. In a candid interview with Sam Yip of HoopsHype, Bosh shared the gravity of his health crisis and how it has affected his life.
A Brush with Death
During the interview, Bosh spoke frankly about the incident, stating, "I almost dropped dead pretty much and came back to life. I'm not joking." The former NBA star was hospitalized for a week due to the condition, which he described as a serious episode involving a pulmonary embolism. This condition is characterized by a blood clot blocking blood flow to an artery in the lungs, often originating from deep veins in the legs.
Understanding Pulmonary Embolism
The Mayo Clinic defines pulmonary embolism as a potentially life-threatening condition, emphasizing the importance of prompt treatment to minimize the risk of death. Bosh is no stranger to such medical difficulties, having faced multiple blood clot issues in recent years, which ultimately played a significant role in the premature end of his illustrious NBA career.
Challenges During His Career
Bosh's struggles with blood clots began in 2015 when he was first diagnosed with a clot that formed in his leg and traveled to his lung. This severely impacted his health, leading to a multiday hospitalization. Despite this, he managed to play 53 games in the 2015-16 season, which turned out to be the final stretch of his 13-year career in the NBA.
However, his battle was far from over. Just a year later, Bosh faced a second diagnosis of a blood clot in his leg, which sidelined him for the remainder of the 2015-16 season. In his documentary "Rebuilt," he revealed that doctors advised him his basketball career was "probably over" after this devastating diagnosis. Determined to continue playing, he attempted a comeback in the 2016-17 season but was ultimately unable to pass a physical with the Miami Heat. In 2017, Bosh was waived by the team, and though he announced a comeback effort in 2018, he officially retired in 2019.
Finding Purpose After Basketball
Despite the health setbacks, Bosh has shown resilience and determination. In a reflective moment last February, he discussed his near-death experience, revealing he woke up covered in his own blood. Instead of succumbing to despair, Bosh used this experience to inspire others, urging them not to procrastinate in pursuing positive changes in their lives—an important reminder that life is fleeting.
Venturing into Media
Fortunately, Bosh seems to be in a better place health-wise now and is pivoting towards a career in media. He has started to explore opportunities behind the camera, having done some work for Amazon Prime during pivotal events like the NBA Cup and NBA Finals. Furthermore, he has also made guest appearances for NBC, indicating a promising new chapter for the former athlete.
Historical Impact on the Court
Chris Bosh’s contributions to the NBA are undeniable. Over his storied 13-season career, he averaged 19.2 points and 8.5 rebounds, earning a place in the spotlight with 11 All-Star selections. His accolades include All-NBA Second Team honors in 2006-07 and two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013, where he played alongside superstars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade with the Miami Heat.
As Bosh continues to navigate life post-basketball, his story resonates not only with sports fans but also with anyone who has faced immense challenges. His journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of addressing one’s health.
