Following a disheartening 19-3 defeat to the New England Patriots, the Chicago Bears announced significant changes to their coaching staff by parting ways with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. This decision came just two days later and marks a notable shift for Waldron, who had only been with the franchise for ten games under head coach Matt Eberflus.
In light of Waldron's departure, Thomas Brown has been named as the new offensive coordinator. Prior to this appointment, Waldron had faced mounting criticism, particularly regarding the offensive structure surrounding rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Throughout the season, the Bears have struggled to put points on the board, scoring fewer than 20 points in five out of nine games. Their recent three-game losing streak has been particularly challenging, as the team averaged just 230 yards per game and managed to score a total of 27 points.
Eberflus had previously addressed concerns about Waldron's future following a 29-9 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, affirming that no coaching changes would be made at that time, despite the Bears holding a 4-4 record. As the team experienced continued struggles, culminating in the loss to the Patriots, Williams faced significant pressure, having been sacked nine times during the game. The Bears' current ranking places them 24th in points per game and 30th in both total yards and passing yards. As the team looks ahead, they remain just two games behind the Green Bay Packers for the final playoff position in the NFC, with an upcoming encounter against their division rivals at Soldier Field.
