Boston Red Sox Sign Veteran Nathaniel Lowe as First Baseman

Red Sox Add Nathaniel Lowe to Address First Base Needs
The Boston Red Sox have made a strategic move to bolster their lineup by signing veteran first baseman Nathaniel Lowe following his designation for assignment by the Washington Nationals. This announcement comes from ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Despite currently struggling offensively, batting just .216 with a .373 slugging percentage in what has been a challenging season for the 30-year-old, Lowe brings valuable experience and past performance to Boston. From 2019 to 2024, he consistently achieved an OPS+ of 107 or higher, showcasing his potential with a combined slugging percentage of .433. Lowe also played a significant role in the Texas Rangers' successful 2023 World Series run, appearing in all 17 games and notching a .259/.310/.519 slash line during the ALCS against the Houston Astros.
The Red Sox's need for a first baseman has been urgent since Triston Casas suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. The team contemplated moving Rafael Devers to first base in response to this injury, but with Lowe's arrival, they are addressing this issue head-on. Passan confirmed that Lowe will receive a prorated minimum salary, making the financial impact on the team minimal.
Despite his recent struggles, Lowe offers an upgrade, particularly against right-handed pitching, where he boasts a .732 OPS across 337 plate appearances, compared to Abraham Toro’s .678 OPS in 202 plate appearances. With the trade deadline passed and the offseason still months away, the Red Sox view Lowe as a low-cost stopgap solution to stabilize first base until a more permanent solution can be explored.
