Baker Mayfield Suffers Shoulder Sprain in Buccaneers' Loss to Rams

Baker Mayfield's Injury Woes Continue
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield faced a setback during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, suffering a left shoulder sprain. Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed the injury after the Buccaneers' 34-7 loss, sparking concerns for the team's quarterback.
During the game, Mayfield exited at the end of the first half following a Hail Mary attempt, which left him in evident pain as he made his way to the locker room. X-rays following the game came back negative, but the injury's implications are still uncertain. Teddy Bridgewater stepped in for Mayfield, taking the reins as the backup quarterback.
This latest injury raises eyebrows, particularly because of Mayfield's history with left shoulder problems. In the 2021 season, when he played for the Cleveland Browns, he dealt with a torn labrum that eventually required surgery. Mayfield started the current season strong, displaying MVP-like potential. As of the game against the Rams, he had tallied 2,365 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and only three interceptions, in addition to 197 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Before exiting the game, he struggled against the Rams' defense, completing only 9 of 19 passes for 41 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Despite losing three of their last four games, the Buccaneers' strong start to the season still places them in a relatively favorable playoff position.
With Mayfield potentially facing time on the sidelines, the Buccaneers are navigating a challenging injury landscape. Star wide receiver Mike Evans is already on the injured list with a broken collarbone, while running back Bucky Irving has been out since September. On a positive note, Chris Godwin has returned from injury, providing some much-needed support to the receiving corps. If Mayfield's injury lingers, the Bucs will rely on Bridgewater to keep their playoff hopes alive.
