The Oakland Athletics are making waves in Major League Baseball by committing to their promising future. The team has officially secured a franchise-record contract with young star Tyler Soderstrom. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Soderstrom has signed a seven-year extension worth $86 million, making it the largest guaranteed deal in the club's history.

Contract Details and Implications

This groundbreaking contract includes a team option for an eighth year and various escalators that could increase the total value to as much as $131 million. Soderstrom's seven-year deal ensures he will remain with the Athletics through the 2032 season, following his anticipated arbitration eligibility in 2027.

This signing marks the third significant long-term extension for the Athletics, emphasizing their commitment to building a competitive roster. Earlier, Brent Rooker signed a five-year, $60 million deal, and Lawrence Butler inked a seven-year, $65.5 million contract in March. Previously, the A's had never handed out a contract exceeding $70 million, making this extension a landmark achievement.

Player Development and Performance

Soderstrom, selected in the first round of the 2020 draft, made his MLB debut midway through the 2023 season. Although he faced challenges initially, posting a .160/.232/.240 slash line, he rebounded impressively after starting the 2024 season in Triple-A. Upon his return, he improved his performance to a .233/.315/.429 line in 61 games. Soderstrom truly broke out during the 2025 season, achieving a .276/.346/.474 slash line alongside 25 homers in 158 games.

He was one of three players aged 24 or under on the Athletics roster to contribute at least 3.0 fWAR last year, joining AL Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz and runner-up Jacob Wilson.
