Athletics Unveil 2025 Uniforms with Sacramento Patch and Honors for Rickey Henderson
The Oakland Athletics have announced the introduction of a distinctive patch for their 2025 uniforms, paying tribute to their temporary home in Sacramento. This patch will feature an image of the iconic Tower Bridge alongside the word 'Sacramento.' The announcement was made by the team on Friday, signifying the club's ongoing transition as they prepare to move locations.
In addition to the new Sacramento patch, the Athletics will honor Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson during the 2025 season by wearing a patch displaying his famed No. 24. Henderson, renowned for his remarkable career with the Athletics, including multiple tenures and a pivotal role in their 1989 World Series victory, passed away in December at the age of 65. This move offers a meaningful recognition of his contributions to the franchise.
During the upcoming season, the Athletics are slated to play at Sutter Health Park, home to the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The team anticipates a three-year stint in Sacramento before making a future transition to Las Vegas ahead of the 2028 season. Notably, this arrangement includes an option for a fourth season should any delays push the relocation timeline to 2029. Preparations for the transition are underway, although construction on the proposed $1.75 billion ballpark in Las Vegas has yet to commence. Renowned for its historic pedigree in minor league baseball, Sutter Health Park is currently undergoing renovations, which include the development of a new clubhouse and enhancements to its natural grass field. Rather than modifying their name to include 'Sacramento,' the Athletics have opted to keep it simple, dropping 'Oakland' and operating solely as the Athletics, with the 'A's' logo taking center stage. The team aims to acknowledge their new city with the patch on their uniforms, ultimately replacing the elephant patch that previously adorned their sleeves. Fans in attendance on Opening Day can look forward to receiving a special hat featuring the Sacramento patch along with a rally towel showcasing Henderson's number. The Athletics will make their debut at Sutter Health Park on March 31 against the Chicago Cubs.
