Arizona Cardinals' James Conner Out for the Season Following Ankle Injury

Major Setback for Arizona Cardinals
In a disappointing turn of events, Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner is set to miss the remainder of the season due to a severe ankle injury sustained during the team's recent 16-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. Conner was carted off the field after the injury, marking a significant blow for the Cardinals.
The 30-year-old Conner has been a key player in Arizona's offense over the past few seasons, boasting back-to-back campaigns with over 1,000 rushing yards and a total of 18 touchdowns between the 2023-24 seasons. His consistency is evident, having never rushed for less than 750 yards in his first four seasons with the team. Although his performance was not as explosive this season—entering Sunday’s contest with only 73 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts—Conner remained an essential contributor alongside quarterback Kyler Murray, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., and tight end Trey McBride.
During the game against the 49ers, Conner managed nine carries for 22 yards. His contract extends through the 2026 season, but with the seriousness of his injury, there are concerns about a prolonged recovery period. As a result, rookie Trey Benson is expected to step up and handle a greater workload in the backfield. Last season, Benson rushed for 291 yards and a touchdown in 13 games, showcasing his potential as a reliable alternative.
The Cardinals entered Week 2 with an undefeated record and ambitious goals for the 2025 season, making Conner's injury a tough loss that could dampen their aspirations moving forward.
