Anticipating the Trade Deadline: Potential Starting Pitchers in the Market

As Major League Baseball's trade deadline approaches on July 31, the market for starting pitchers is generating significant interest. While numerous players have emerged in trade talks, the feasibility of these trades remains uncertain. The names circulating often do not reflect their actual availability or market value. Despite this ambiguity, creative speculation surrounding potential trades continues, prompting an analysis of intriguing starting pitchers who might be available and the teams that could benefit from their acquisition.

Latest reports indicate that the Washington Nationals are open to discussing a trade involving MacKenzie Gore. While multiple teams have expressed interest, the Nationals are reportedly "very unlikely" to part ways with the 2025 All-Star. The Seattle Mariners emerge as a suitable destination for Gore, who has impressed with a 3.59 ERA and 140 strikeouts over 112.2 innings this season. The Mariners have struggled with injuries within their rotation and could utilize Gore's talents. Their top-ranked farm system also provides the prospect capital necessary to facilitate such a move.

Luis Severino, currently in the first year of a three-year, $67 million contract, has garnered attention in trade discussions as reported by Ken Rosenthal. Although Severino has expressed dissatisfaction with his current playing environment at Sutter Health Park, a change in scenery may benefit him. The New York Mets could be an ideal fit, as they require additional starting pitching to bolster a rotation dealing with injuries. Severino's past performance as a two-time All-Star and the Mets' financial flexibility regarding his contract enhance the appeal of this potential acquisition.

The San Diego Padres have fielded inquiries regarding Dylan Cease but are not traditional sellers, focusing on moves that would strengthen their roster rather than dismantle it. The Chicago Cubs have also shown interest, viewing Cease as a potential solution to improve their rotation's strikeout rate, the lowest among playoff contenders. A reunion with the Cubs, where Cease began his career, would be a compelling narrative, contingent on the Cubs offering the right trade pieces, particularly from their minor league system.

Amid trade speculation, the Padres have also looked into acquiring Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins. Alcantara, a previous Cy Young winner, has had a challenging season, yet his potential remains high. While he might be more suited for the Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays represent another team in contention that may benefit from his acquisition. With a rotation ERA of 4.52, the Blue Jays could utilize Alcantara's ground-ball tendencies, supported by their strong infield defense, even as they navigate a challenging trade market with limited prospects.

Edward Cabrera, another Marlins pitcher, has gained traction in trade discussions according to sources. The Houston Astros are eyeing Cabrera, who has shown promising performance metrics this season. Despite concerns regarding injuries, Cabrera's potential upside and cost-effectiveness make him an attractive target for Houston, which is looking to strengthen its rotation ahead of a playoff push. The Astros must balance the need for pitching with the limitations of their minor league assets.

Seth Lugo, while not actively being marketed, has attracted attention from the Kansas City Royals, who may seek a deal involving controllable outfield talent in return. Although the Los Angeles Dodgers primarily seek a starting pitcher, Lugo possesses durability and could help alleviate some of the burdens on the Dodgers' overworked bullpen, making them an interesting potential destination.

The Pittsburgh Pirates appear ready to be active at the trade deadline, with Mitch Keller serving as a key asset. Keller's ability to eat innings and maintain a respectable ERA positions him as a valuable contributor for teams in need of mid-rotation stability. The Boston Red Sox, facing rotation challenges, could benefit from Keller's presence, potentially aiding their postseason aspirations while providing the Pirates access to young hitting talent for future growth.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have also sparked trade speculation, particularly concerning Zach Gallen. Once a Cy Young contender, Gallen's performance has waned in recent seasons, prompting the idea of a trade. The New York Yankees, seeking to add pitching depth as injuries mount, represent a logical trade partner. Both teams hold mutual interests in addressing their respective needs, with the Yankees possessing a strong group of pitching prospects that could sway Arizona's decision if they choose to move Gallen.
