Anthony Edwards Fined by NBA for Obscene Gesture
Anthony Edwards, the star guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, was fined $50,000 by the NBA for making an obscene gesture directed at a referee during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, according to insider Chris Haynes. This incident occurred in the context of the Timberwolves' narrow 127-125 loss to the Grizzlies.
This latest fine marks another instance of disciplinary action for Edwards this season, as he previously received a $35,000 penalty for a similar gesture aimed at the crowd during a victory over the Sacramento Kings on November 15. Furthermore, Edwards faced a $75,000 fine on December 23 for public criticism of the officiating, accompanied by inappropriate and profane language. This season alone, he has accrued additional fines of $100,000 and $25,000 for using profane language in post-game interviews.
The Timberwolves' 2024-25 season has been characterized by inconsistency, currently placing them No. 8 in the Western Conference with a record of 20-18. This performance is a stark contrast to the previous season, where they won 56 games and reached the conference finals. While Edwards' scoring average has slightly decreased compared to the previous season, he has improved his three-point shooting, boasting averages of 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, alongside career-best percentages of 43.9% from the field and 42.1% from three-point range. Moreover, Edwards leads the league with nine technical fouls this season, while also averaging 4.3 free-throw attempts per game, his lowest since the 2021-22 season. His average shot distance stands at 16.9 feet from the basket, reflecting his preference for long-range attempts as he averages 9.9 three-point shots per game.
