Alvin Kamara Endorses Darren Rizzi for Saints Head Coach Position
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has shown support for Darren Rizzi to be the team's next head coach. In a post on social media platform X, Kamara hinted that his choice for head coach 'rhyme wit Fizzi.' Despite claiming not to discuss football much during the offseason, Kamara expressed amusement at the narratives surrounding coaching positions, suggesting that many spectators have not actively engaged in organized sports recently.
Darren Rizzi, who has served as the Saints' special teams coordinator since 2019 and as the assistant head coach since 2022, stepped in as the interim head coach following the dismissal of Dennis Allen in November. Under Rizzi's leadership in eight games, the team recorded a 3-5 record, an improvement from their previous 2-7 start. The franchise has explored various candidates for the head coaching role, including former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, with discussions for an in-person interview taking place this week.
In addition to Rizzi, the Saints are also scheduled to conduct in-person interviews with several other candidates, including Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. However, these interviews have been postponed due to severe winter weather conditions in New Orleans. Rizzi, who has a background in coaching at the collegiate level, has not previously held a full-time head coaching position in the NFL but led Division II New Haven to a 15-14 record from 1999 to 2001. The Saints hope to turn their fortunes around, especially after a disappointing 5-12 record in 2024, their poorest since a 3-13 season in 2005.
