Alvin Kamara Backs Darren Rizzi for Saints Head Coach Position
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara recently expressed his support for Darren Rizzi to become the next head coach of the team. In a post on X, Kamara hinted at his preference, stating, "Aite my vote for head coach rhyme wit Fizzi..." His commentary also included observations on the opinions surrounding coaching selections, underscoring that most of those debating the topic may not have played organized sports for some time.
Darren Rizzi has been with the Saints organization as the special teams coordinator since 2019 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2022. Following the firing of Dennis Allen in November, Rizzi was named the interim head coach. In the eight games he led as interim head coach, Rizzi recorded a 3-5 record, a slight improvement over the team's earlier 2-7 start. Alongside Rizzi, the Saints have been exploring various candidates for the head coaching position, including former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who is expected to have an in-person interview this week.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Saints are also scheduled to interview several other candidates, including Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. However, these interviews have been postponed due to severe winter weather conditions in New Orleans. Although Rizzi has not served as a full-time head coach in the NFL, he has some collegiate experience, having led Division II New Haven to a 15-14 record from 1999 to 2001 and a 3-9 record as head coach of FCS Rhode Island in 2008. Rizzi's coaching career includes significant roles at Rutgers, followed by extensive experience in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins before joining the Saints. The team aims to break its current four-year postseason drought, having faced difficulties such as injuries to key players, including quarterback Derek Carr and wide receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, which impacted their performance in the 2024 season.
