Alex Ovechkin Set to Return After Injury
Alex Ovechkin is poised to return to the ice just 40 days following a fracture of his left leg. Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery confirmed that Ovechkin will make his comeback during the Capitals' upcoming road game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, as reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Ovechkin participated in full practice on Friday, according to NHL.com's Tom Gulitti. Coach Carbery mentioned that the team's decision regarding Ovechkin's availability would depend on how his leg responded during the practice session. Upon his return, Ovechkin will rejoin teammates Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas on the Capitals' top forward line and will also feature prominently on the team’s top power-play unit alongside Strome, John Carlson, Jakob Chychrun, and Tom Wilson.
Since suffering a fractured left fibula due to a leg-on-leg collision in a game against the Utah Hockey Club on November 18, Ovechkin has missed 16 games. This stretch marks one of the longest absence periods in his illustrious career. Up to that point, Ovechkin had only missed a total of 35 games due to injury across his first 19 seasons in the NHL. Historically, the Capitals have struggled in Ovechkin's absence, posting a record of 26-28-5 without their captain prior to the current season. However, reinforcements such as Strome and Chychrun have helped keep the Capitals competitive, as they have maintained a solid 10-5-1 record in Ovechkin's absence. Ovechkin’s return, after starting the season with 15 goals and 25 points in 18 games, could significantly enhance the Capitals' chances against top contenders in the Eastern Conference, including the New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Additionally, this marks a crucial moment in Ovechkin's pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's all-time goalscoring record. Having scored twice against Utah prior to his injury, Ovechkin currently stands at 868 career goals, leaving him 26 goals shy of Gretzky's record of 894, with 48 games remaining in the Capitals' season.
