On Friday night, the 2024 Platinum Glove Awards were presented, celebrating the standout defensive players in Major League Baseball for the regular season. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh was honored with the award in the American League, while Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang received the accolade in the National League.
Raleigh made history by becoming only the second American League catcher to win the Platinum Glove since the award's inception in 2011, standing out as the sole recipient from the Mariners. He excelled defensively, leading all American League catchers with an impressive 17 defensive runs saved, while also demonstrating his ability to catch attempted base stealers, tying for the league lead by thwarting 20 runners trying to steal second base.
Turang also made significant contributions defensively, leading all National League infielders with 22 defensive runs saved. His achievement marked him as the first player from Milwaukee to win a Platinum Glove. Both Turang and fellow Brewers player Sal Frelick, who was awarded a Gold Glove this year, made headlines by becoming the first duo from the team to earn Gold Glove honors in the same season since 1979. Additionally, the Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers were recognized for their team defenses, claiming the Gold Glove Team Awards in their respective leagues.
