11-Year-Old Collector Unveils Rare Paul Skenes 1-of-1 Card
On Tuesday, Topps announced that a unique 1-of-1 autographed MLB debut patch card featuring Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes was pulled by an 11-year-old collector from Los Angeles. This card, part of the 2024 Topps Chrome Update set, garnered significant attention when it was first introduced by Topps in November.
Shortly after the card's announcement, the Pittsburgh Pirates expressed interest in acquiring this exclusive collectible. Prior to its discovery, the team had proactively extended an offer that included an impressive package of perks. This offer featured two season tickets behind home plate for 30 years, an opportunity to participate in a softball game at PNC Park, a VIP experience at Pirates training camp, a meet-and-greet with Skenes, and two of Skenes' autographed jerseys. The team reiterated this offer following the card's reveal.
Adding to the intrigue, Skenes' girlfriend, LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, augmented the offer by inviting the card's holder to join her in a suite at a Pirates game. Paul Skenes, who was selected first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft from LSU, has made a significant impact in his rookie season. He finished the season with an impressive record of 11-3, a 1.96 ERA, and 170 strikeouts over 133 innings, which included a start in the All-Star Game and recognition as the NL Rookie of the Year. The rarity of the 1-of-1 card, given the excitement surrounding Skenes' performance, indicates it may fetch a considerable sum at auction, with estimates potentially reaching six figures.
