NHL President Hints at Future Outdoor Game in Europe
Exciting developments are on the horizon for hockey fans as the NHL is considering its first outdoor game in Europe within the next few years. NHL president of content and events, Steve Mayer, recently expressed that he "wouldn't be surprised" if an NHL Stadium Series game takes place across the Atlantic soon.
The concept of outdoor NHL games has gained popularity since the inaugural Stadium Series event highlighted the league's ability to showcase hockey in stunning, open-air venues. The first of these games occurred in 2014 when the Anaheim Ducks clashed with the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. As the series progresses, the next game is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2026, featuring a matchup between the Boston Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
International Expansion Through the Global Series
The NHL has also been expanding its global presence with regular-season games through its ongoing Global Series, which began in 2017. This international slate kicked off with a game held in Stockholm, where the Ottawa Senators faced off against the Colorado Avalanche. This year, the Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins are set to play two games at Stockholm's Avicii Arena, further cementing the league's commitment to broadening its fanbase worldwide.
Mayer has indicated that the NHL has received numerous inquiries from around the globe regarding potential outdoor games. While no specific locations or venues have been finalized yet, the discussions signal a significant interest in expanding the NHL's footprint in international markets. As noted in an earlier conversation, Mayer stated, "We haven't really focused on one particular area, one particular stadium, but we have had conversations about a potential outdoor game overseas. Nothing is imminent at all, but I could see down the line, years as something in the future that is a possibility for sure."
Looking Toward Europe
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the NHL is particularly keen on tapping into the German market. Speculations suggest that the league might consider playing an outdoor game at a German soccer stadium, opening up new avenues for showcasing hockey in regions that are passionate about sports.
This winter, the NHL's outdoor activities continue in Florida, highlighted by the 2026 NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2 in Miami, followed by the exciting Stadium Series in Tampa. With the potential for future outdoor games in Europe, hockey fans around the world are eagerly awaiting what the NHL has in store.
