Lawrence Taylor Urges Giants Rookie Abdul Carter to Step Up After Early Struggles

Abdul Carter Faces Tough Love from Giants Legend Lawrence Taylor
In the midst of a challenging rookie season, New York Giants defender Abdul Carter has found himself under the spotlight. The No. 3 overall pick is facing scrutiny not only for his performance but also for his commitment to the team, prompting comments from Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor.
Taylor, a franchise icon, did not hold back in his assessment of Carter's struggles, telling the New York Post, "Wake up. This is what you worked for, this is where you want to be, so now you're there... Let’s wake up." His remarks highlight the importance of accountability and dedication, especially for a player with such high expectations.
Concerns Over Carter's Commitment
Carter's on-field contributions have yet to impress, totaling 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks this season. However, it is his off-field behavior that has raised the most eyebrows. Recently, the rookie was benched at the beginning of the Giants' Week 11 game against the Green Bay Packers after missing a team walk-through, reportedly because he was asleep at the team's facilities.
Adding to his woes, Carter faced another benching for the game against the New England Patriots due to “missing all/part of a team responsibility,” as noted by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. This situation has led Giants general manager Joe Schoen to downplay the incidents, asserting that Carter is aware of the significance of his actions and what it takes to be a professional.
Veteran Leadership Needed
In addition to his direct critique of Carter, Taylor emphasized the need for veteran players like Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns to mentor the rookie. "Those two guys need to talk to No. 51 and get him straight and say, 'Hey, you gotta get your priorities right.' Simple as that," Taylor stated. He believes there’s no excuse for lack of hustle or commitment, especially from a player who was the third pick in the draft.
Despite the setbacks, Taylor maintains that Carter has the potential to succeed if he can adjust his approach. “He’s just gotta get his stuff together. And if he gets his stuff together, New York will love him. You make history on what you do on that field, not off that field,” Taylor added, reminding fans that the young player's career is still unfolding.
